Peter Weissberg

Peter joined Medicxi as an advisor after retiring from the Medical Directorship of the British Heart Foundation, the largest non-commercial funder of cardiovascular research in Europe. Whilst at the BHF he oversaw the award of about £1b for laboratory and clinical research and established six BHF Centres of Excellence for cardiovascular research and three BHF Centres of Regenerative Medicine. Before that he was the BHF Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine in the University of Cambridge and Consultant Cardiologist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital where he was Director of Cardiology for 13 years.

Peter’s research has focussed on the cell and molecular biology of atherosclerosis and his research group pioneered molecular imaging of vascular disease in patients. He is a fellow of Wolfson College Cambridge, the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Royal College of Physicians and currently chairs UK Biocentre and the Research Council of the Scar Free Foundation. In 2017 he was appointed CBE for services to medical research and cardiovascular health.
